Health Insurance Waivers

Students who wish to use their own insurance must file for a waiver of the UO Health Insurance by the following waiver deadlines:

Annual/Fall Term October 31
Winter Term January 31
Spring Term April 30
Summer Term July 15

Students must submit updated documentation and a new waiver form each fall.

To be approved, an insurance plan must meet or exceed these requirements:

  1. A minimum of $250,000 of coverage for medical services per injury/illness, per year.
  2. Medical evacuation benefit of no less than $10,000.
  3. Repatriation of remains benefit of no less than $7,500.
  4. Benefits must be payable in the U.S.

For a waiver application to be considered, students must submit documentation from their insurance company verifying the above requirements and the effective dates of coverage. The documentation must be in English and list coverage amounts in U.S. currency.

Students must show proof of insurance coverage effective from the first day of class. The waiver must be submitted before the waiver deadline to avoid a “Registration Hold” for the following term. Late waivers will not be accepted.

Some students have family members who receive insurance through an employer. If a student is covered by a family member’s insurance they may file a waiver using that insurance as long as that insurance meets the requirements Please keep in mind students must still have coverage for repatriation of remains and medical evacuation. Many health insurance plans available through employers do not include this coverage. If the plan does not include coverage for repatriation of remains and medical evacuation, the student will need to purchase supplemental travel insurance which provides this coverage. The student will need to submit documentation for both insurances.
